CHENNAI: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation has collected Rs 19.40 lakh as penalty from 20,564 ticketless passengers in three months, stating October 1.
The MTC launched a drive against ticketless passengers in October. In October, officials caught 8,935 ticketless travellers and collected Rs 8.77 lakh from them.
In November, the officials booked 6,415 people and collected a sum of Rs 5.89 lakh from them.
In December, they collected Rs 4.73 lakh from 5,214 ticketless travellers.
Around 1,500 staff members, including conductors and ticket checkers, were involved in the drive. They were posted in important areas like Chennai Central, Egmore, Parry’s Corner, Purasawalkam, Tambaram, Sholinganallur, T Nagar, Vadapalani, Koyambedu, Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Avadi and Guindy.
“The staff members went on surprise checks in all these areas,” said a press release from the MTC.
With 3,798 buses, the MTC earns a little more than Rs 3 crore every day. It serves 51.84 lakh passenger on an average every day with more than 24,000 employees.
